Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882) was an English poet, painter, and translator, and one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Born in London to an Italian émigré family, he studied at the Royal Academy Schools before turning his attention to both visual art and literature. His early translations of Italian poetry, published as The Early Italian Poets (1861), reflect his lifelong engagement with Dante Alighieri and medieval Italian culture. As a poet, Rossetti is best known for Poems (1870) and Ballads and Sonnets (1881), which include The House of Life, a sequence exploring love, art, and mortality. His dual career as painter and poet made him a central figure of Victorian aestheticism, and his work influenced both later Symbolist poetry and the development of English art in the nineteenth century. Despite periods of personal difficulty and reclusion in his later years, Rossetti’s writing and art remain significant for their fusion of medievalism, sensuality, and psychological depth. Read more
