Fructose sugar, a natural and non-toxic reducing agent, is ideal for creating indigo vats. It works by donating electrons to oxygen molecules, reducing them and enabling blue indigo to convert into soluble leuco-indigo for dyeing. Optimal performance occurs when the indigo vat is heated between 130F and 140F, as lower temperatures may slow reduction, while higher temperatures can scald sugars and create vat sediment.
