HOPG, a high-purity carbon form, offers surface microscopists a renewable, smooth surface. Unlike mica, it's completely non-polar, providing a carbon-only background for elemental analysis. Its extreme smoothness results in a featureless background, except at atomic levels. Widely used in scanning probe microscopy, HOPG also serves as a calibration specimen, cleaving like mica due to its layered structure. It consists of highly ordered carbon planes, with quality defined by the mosaic spread angle. Standard HOPG has a mosaic angle of 3.5 1.5, with substrates offering more highly ordered planes at 0.8 0.2 and 0.4 0.1.
