In 1943, Steyr Werke proposed to the Waffenamt to mount the potent 7.5cm PaK40 on the RSO tractor. The idea was well-received, leading to the conversion of 50 vehicles. The RSO's running gear stayed unchanged, while its driver's compartment was replaced with a low, lightly armored superstructure. The weapon was attached to the frame beneath the usual RSO bed. Army Group South tested these vehicles in early 1944, impressing Hitler who ordered a 1944 production plan. Initially, 60 were to be produced in March, increasing to 400 per month from July. However, only 60 were completed. The result was a lightweight, mobile yet highly exposed anti-tank weapon, primarily used to support anti-tank infantry units on the Eastern Front during 1943/44.
